One of the most natural-looking, beautiful and durable restorations available today, porcelain fillings are a great alternative to traditional silver fillings. Because porcelain fillings match your natural tooth color, they are more aesthetically pleasing than a mouth full of silver fillings. Restoration with porcelain fillings also preserves tooth structure and strength since only the decayed portion of the cavity needs to be removed. With silver fillings, significant tooth structure must be removed in order to complete the restoration. Silver fillings are also prone to expansion over the years, which can lead to cracks and fractures in the restored tooth. Porcelain fillings do not expand, and they can be bonded directly to the tooth structure to create a better seal for the cavity. Porcelain fillings are very durable, often lasting for more than 15 years.
Restoration with porcelain fillings usually takes two visits to complete. First, the cavity will be completely cleaned and the decayed portion of the tooth removed. Next, we’ll make an impression of the tooth so that the laboratory can custom-make a porcelain filling to fit the cavity precisely. A temporary filling will be placed in the tooth until the porcelain filling is ready. During your second visit, the temporary filling will be removed, and the customized porcelain filling will be placed in your tooth. A special high intensity light will be used to harden the bonding materials. When the restoration is complete, your smile will look beautiful and natural.
Yes. Porcelain fillings are extremely strong and durable. When the restoration is done properly, porcelain fillings will often last 15 years, and sometimes significantly longer.
Unlike silver fillings, porcelain is not a good conductor of temperatures. Therefore, porcelain fillings have very little sensitivity to hot and cold.
The drilling process to remove silver fillings can be irritating to the tooth, so we don’t usually recommend replacing all silver fillings. If there is a problem with a silver filling, such as cracks in the filling or a new cavity beneath the filling, then replacing the filling with porcelain would be a great option.
