Help! I Think I Broke a Veneer

Book an Appointment Today

Veneers are one of the few dental options that give your teeth an instantly brighter, smoother, and even straighter look. The porcelain shells can improve your smile’s appearance by filling in gaps, whitening the tone, improving the shape of your teeth, and more.

But what if, once you have veneers, you accidentally break one?

At Rozenberg Dental NYC, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City, board-certified cosmetic dentist Dr. Lana Rozenberg and her team are pleased to provide veneer care, whether you’re seeking your first set or a repair.

If you think you’ve broken a veneer, read on for some tips and encouragement.

Why veneers break

Veneers are quite strong and durable, but they don’t last forever. In general, you can expect your veneers to last for 7-15 years. Similar to the natural enamel on your teeth, they can chip, crack, or even pop off – especially if you’re past-due for replacements.

You might have bitten into an especially gooey caramel or taken a hit to your teeth during an accident, fall, or sport, all of which can make way for damage. In other words, most anything that can crack a tooth can damage a veneer.

What to do about a broken veneer

If you broke a veneer, there’s no need to panic. Contact our office to schedule an appointment so we can get it replaced or re-bonded.

In the meantime, take these steps:

  • Carefully remove any remaining, loose particles of the veneer from your mouth
  • Store the broken veneer or particles in a tissue, tucked into a small container
  • Limit biting or chewing food with the affected tooth
  • Try to prevent hot or cold air from touching the tooth

You can still brush your teeth as usual, but go gently where the veneer lays, or once laid. Since the surface of the tooth was ground down a bit before the veneer was placed, it might be highly sensitive.

Replacing or fixing your veneer

During your exam, Dr. Rozenberg will determine the best course of action for addressing your broken veneer. If the entire veneer was debonded and fell off, she may only need to reattach it, after some cleaning of the tooth.

If the veneer is broken beyond repair, she may order a replacement to reattach. That process will be very similar to your initial veneer process – painless and brief. If your unbroken or remaining veneers need replacing as well, she’ll discuss that with you, too.
